Campaigners marched against plans to build new homes in Mirfield.

The rally was staged in the town at the weekend after members of Save Mirfield, Project Mirfield and the Lady Heton Action group joined forces.

They want to fight plans to build new homes which they say will change the face of the town.

Bellway Homes has submitted a planning application for 135 new homes on Balderstone Hall Fields off Hepworth Lane.

Participants in yesterday’s rally marched from Taylor Hill Lane to Guilder Hall community centre for speeches.

They passed by another proposed building site at Mirfield Moor off Leeds Road, where Taylor Wimpey plans to build 166 homes plus industrial development.

The rally aimed to highlight the plans and get local people involved in the fight to have their say about where they live.

Mirfield has become a hotspot for developers and campaigners say that the town’s smaller green spaces are also under threat.

Bellway says its proposed new homes would provide much needed family homes and includes 50 affordable homes.

The application is open to public comments through Kirklees Council until June 2.

Dewsbury MP Simon Reevell, who attended the rally, tweeted his praise for the large crowd and urged Kirklees to listen to the public.
