A police emergency call handler kept her cool through a bizarre exchange with a driver out on the road.

A man called 999 and asked if West Yorkshire Police could arrange for a spare tyre for his car.

The handler heard: “I want to change a tyre. I am going to London and my wheel is broke.”

Asked where he was he said he was on the A629.

“Do you have breakdown recovery?” asked the call handler.

“It’s a company car and I’m going to London,” said the man. “I just want to change the tyre.”

Politely, the handler told him he needed to arrange a recovery firm.

“We don’t carry spares,” she said. “We can’t do it for you. You have to arrange that.”

The driver said he was somewhere on the A629

Reply: “OK. How can I do it? I live far away. I’m going to London.”

Handler: “Contact the car hire people and see how to arrange it.”

Reply: “OK. Thank you. Bye bye.”

West Yorkshire Police put the exchange on their website as an example of an inappropriate 999 call.

Another inappropriate call was from someone who said there was a fly in the bedroom.

A police spokesman pointed out: “People ringing 999 for the wrong reasons are potentially putting people’s lives at risk by taking call handlers’ time away from genuine emergency calls.”
