HOMES are wanted for these two German shepherd police pups.

But there is a catch; you’ll have to give them back.

The West Yorkshire Police have their own dog breeding programme and as part of that pups need to live with people to get them away from life in the kennels for a while.

The kennels are at the police’s Carrgate base in Wakefield.

Sgt Rick Green, of the force’s dog section, said: “New pups need to carry out their initial, very basic training and socialisation with foster families who can get the dog used to being around people and in environments away from the kennels at Carrgate.

“Two such pups are four-month-old Gimley and Gonzo. They need a short-term home until they are ready to go on to their first stage of formal police dog training.’’

The latest litter from the police’s own in-house breeding programme are due to be born any day now.

The force is always on the lookout for unwanted German shepherds or springer spaniels to train as police dogs. They are known as ‘gift dogs’.

Sgt Green added: “There are strict criteria that must be met when we assess a gift dog, so we can’t guarantee we will take every dog we see.

“Ideally, the dog needs to be under two years of age, in good physical condition and with a good temperament."
