CAN you hack a 25-mile trek to help prevent cruelty to children?

That is the question the NSPCC is asking Huddersfield people as it launches its 2008 Hack appeal.

The Hack – Hike Against Cruelty to Kids – is a 25-mile circular sponsored walk.

It must be completed within 12 hours on August 30.

It starts at Hade Edge above Holmfirth and uses parts of the Kirklees Way, Pennine Way and Trans-Pennine Trail.

This year’s event will be the fourth held to raise money to help vulnerable and abused children.

Last year 450 walkers took part and raised more than £55,000 for the NSPCC.

Tony Thomas, NSPCC volunteer and Hack organiser, said: “Last year’s event was fantastic, raising a huge amount for children who aren’t given the same love and respect as others.

“I want to make the 2008 Hack bigger and better. With everyone’s help we can beat last year’s figure.”

The route is open to all grades of walker, but because of the varied terrain hill walking boots are essential.

Only walkers aged 18 or over can enter. No pets are allowed.

There will be free bananas and water en route.

After the event walkers will be rewarded with a free barbecue and refreshments from Huddersfield Sailing Club.

Professional boxer Amir Khan is supporting this year’s event as an NSPCC ambassador.
