THE name of a politician arrested on child porn offences will appear on ballot papers next week.

Stewart Brown is Labour’s candidate for Elland in the Calderdale Council elections, which take place on Thursday.

He was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of possessing and distributing indecent images of children.

The 59-year-old father-of-one was questioned by police and then bailed pending further investigation.

Police revealed yesterday that they had taken some computer equipment for forensic examination in connection with the case.

Mr Brown has been suspended from the Labour party.

But yesterday Calderdale Council confirmed that his name would remain on ballot papers in Elland.

A spokesman said: “We can confirm that he is a candidate in Elland ward and will remain so. He cannot withdraw.

“Nominations closed on April 4. Once nominations are in there is a week-long period when people can withdraw their names. This has now passed.

“Those are the election rules. Ballot papers have been printed and postal votes have been sent out.”

The Examiner contacted the Labour Party yesterday.

A spokesman said: “Stewart Brown has been suspended from the party pending an investigation.”

The spokesman refused to advise Labour voters in Elland whether they should vote for Mr Brown, vote for another candidate or stay at home on polling day.

Mr Brown, a retired senior environmental health officer, lives in Hebden Bridge.

He represented the Calder Valley ward on Calderdale Council between 1996 and 2000.

Mr Brown also represented Hebden Bridge on Hebden Royd Town Council for 12 years, including a stint as mayor in 2006.
