A CANDLE-LIT vigil is to be held for a murdered youngster on what would have been his 17th birthday.

The vigil will be held by family and friends of Joe McCafferty on Haywood Avenue in Marsh at 7pm on Monday.

Joe was just seven years old when he died in a fire started by an arsonist at a house on Haywood Avenue early on May 3, 1997 - just two days after Labour swept to victory in the General Election.

Recently his mum, 41-year-old Tracey, urged people to talk about who started the fire.

She is sure someone knows who did it.

"I now know there are people out there who know who is responsible," she said.

"It is vital they come forward and talk to the police in confidence."

Joe's family have put up posters from the town centre to Marsh and across to Birchencliffe, appealing for people to come forward with information.

Tracey added: "I feel it is only a matter of time before we find out who has done it."

An inquest last year ruled that Joe had been unlawfully killed.
