THOUSANDS of lights were illuminated last night in memory of lost loved ones.

Kirkwood Hospice's Light Up a Life appeal once again proved a huge success.

More than 2,500 lights were lit at the hospice, in Dalton, yesterday to remember those gone but not forgotten.

In the past few months people have been buying lights to dedicate to loved ones.

Individual messages were also placed in the Book of Light for everyone for whom a light had been dedicated.

Fundraising manager Annabel Arkless said: "The ceremony was very moving. This is a very emotional time for a lot of people but also a wonderful time to remember loved ones.

"So far to date we have raised more than £35,000."
