A 38-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested for growing cannabis after a fire broke out at his Huddersfield home, killing his pet dog.

Police were called to the bungalow in New Hey Road at around 7.40pm on Sunday.

The fire caused extensive damage in the utility areas where six cannabis plants had been growing.

The electricity supply had not been tampered with, but the fire was believed to have been due to an electrical fault.

Crew Commander Paul Mellor said: “The fire appears to have started in a utility area which was being used for growing cannabis.

“It may have been due to an electrical fault.

“We spent two hours at the property which had extensive fire and heat damage to the bedroom and utility area. Unfortunately the home owner’s Rottweiler dog died from smoke inhalation in the fire.”

The fire also caused damage to a neighbouring property.

Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing. Police said the 38-year old man was arrested and received a caution.
