A YOUNG father drove his newborn son just minutes after smoking cannabis.
Gareth Lloyd Pritchard had taken his girlfriend and their new baby to watch fireworks near his home on Manchester Road in Milnsbridge last Guy Fawkes Night.
Pritchard, 23, a student, smoked a cannabis joint and then set off back home with them at 7.50pm.
But police saw the black VW Golf weaving across the road and arrested him.
Pritchard pleaded guilty to driving while unfit through drugs and driving without insurance when he appeared before Huddersfield magistrates on Friday.
Mr Richard Ogden, prosecuting, said Pritchard admitted to police that he had smoked cannabis five minutes before he set off.
They did a series of roadside tests, which indicated he was unfit to drive.
Mr Ogden said: "His eyes were watery and his speech was slurred.
"He had no insurance as the car belonged to his girlfriend."
At the police station Pritchard tested positive for cannabis.
In his own mitigation Pritchard said: "I did not feel under the influence. I had taken some cannabis and I'm very sorry about that.
"My girlfriend had given birth the month before and was feeling sore. That's why I was driving."
Magistrate Mrs Elizabeth Rogan told him: "This was a very serious offence.
"You could not only have killed other people, but also your girlfriend and newborn baby."
Pritchard was banned from driving for a year and fined £150 with £43 costs.
