A man discarded cannabis out a window when he saw police officers arriving at his home in Mirfield.

Michael Cavanagh was heard to comment as he leaned out the window “drug squad if I ever saw one” before throwing two separate bags from the first floor flat window in Crown Nest Court.

Robert Galley, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court yesterday that officers subsequently recovered the items which were found to contain 48 small self-seal bags of skunk cannabis.

Scales were recovered from the kitchen and two mobile phones were seized one of which contained messages about drugs.

Mr Galley told the court if sold in individual £10 deals the cannabis would be worth £480. When interviewed before his fingerprint was found on one of the wraps, Cavanagh had denied involvement with the drugs.

He said one wrap found in his home was for his own personal use.

Mark Brookes representing Cavanagh said he had admitted the charge early. Although he had a “record of some vintage” his last drugs offence was in 1997.

Cavanagh, 44, admitted possessing cannabis with intent and being concerned in supplying the drug. He was given a 12 month prison sentence suspended for 18 months with 12 months supervision, a nine-month drug rehabilitation order and 200 hours unpaid work.

Recorder Sara Dodd said she accepted his account he was supplying to friends and while the offences were serious and crossed the custody threshold the sentence could be suspended.
