Visitors to an animal farm will be squealing with delight, thanks to the birth of its 1000th piglet.

No porkies were being told about their latest arrival at Cannon Hall Farm at Cawthorne, near Barnsley,

Staff at the farm have worked tirelessly day and night to deliver litters in the farmyard opened in July last year.

The special piglet has been christened Dickie after one of the farm’s directors, Richard Nicholson, who shares the same birthday.

The cute piggy is enjoying snuggling up to his brothers and sisters in their eco-friendly under-floor heated pen.

The farm’s managing director Robert Nicholson said: “The animals absolutely love the new buildings.

“This has been reflected in increased production as happy animals do better and grow faster.

“The new farmyard has been a real revelation for us allowing the public to see everything that goes on during a normal working hours including tractor work.

“Our daily milking demonstrations have been really well received. Kids love to see where milk comes from and the farmers keep everyone entertained.”

The piglet was the latest addition to the bustling working site, which has also welcomed tiny Shetland pony, Pebbles, who was rejected by her mother.

She is one of the rare breeds being cared for by workers at the farm.

Robert said: “She’s one of three tiny Shetland pony foals which have been born over the past three months.

“Unfortunately her mum rejected her and we’ve had to bottle feed her. It’s been a bit of a struggle getting up at all hours but luckily she’s a little character with a real lust for life and she’s always waiting eagerly for her bottle when it arrives.”

One of the farm workers, Alice Porter, has been in charge of most of Pebble’s feeds and will now be allowed to keep the little pony at the farm, due to her dedication.

Alice said: “She’s such a friendly little thing and we have built up a real bond so I’m delighted she is going to be kept at the farm. I’m hoping that in a few years she’ll have a foal of her own and I’ll be able to look after them both.”

Over the summer the farm will offer numerous family activities, including tractor and trailer rides, birds of prey, and sheep and ferret racing.
