FOOTBALL fans’ cars were targeted by thieves as they watched Huddersfield Town on Tuesday.

Six cars were broken into in the Hillhouse area during Town’s 4-3 victory over Walsall at the Galpharm Stadium.

There has been an ongoing problem with vehicle crime on match days.

Just last week the police issued warnings after 60 reported break-ins – many on streets around the stadium – in two months.

Det Con Dave Kinghorn, from Huddersfield CID, said drivers should take precautions.

“Remove anything of value from view,” he said. “Even the most insignificant items – small change and cigarettes – can be a temptation.”

The incidents on Tuesday night followed seven car break-ins in the Skelmanthorpe and Upper Cumberworth areas on Monday and Tuesday.

In most of the incidents CD players were taken.

And particular warnings have been issued to car owners in the Colne and Holme valleys after a spate of burglaries and car thefts.

Police say six properties were broken into in March by thieves who then stole the householders’ vehicles.

Sgt Simon Haigh, of The Valleys Neighbourhood Policing Team, said criminals look for keys left in view near to front or back doors with letter boxes or cat flaps.

He added: “We would advise people to always lock their doors and windows.

“Please do not leave keys in your door.

“Make sure you never leave keys in view, on hooks or near your doors.

“Always hide them away in a safe place, but make sure they are easily retrievable in the event of an emergency.”

Wheel locks should be used and cars parked in garages wherever possible.

Sgt Haigh added: “Finally, stay vigilant and report any suspicious circumstances where people are paying particular attention to houses and cars parked in driveways.”
