A 68-year-old man was attacked by robbers who stole his family car from his driveway.

The thieves were then seen to speed away in the silver Vauxhall Zafira Elegance and police have urged people to keep a lookout for the car.

The thieves struck after the man reversed the Zafira into the driveway at his home on Cowcliffe Hill Road, Cowcliffe, at 10pm on Monday.

The victim - who asked not to be identified - said: "I can only think they were opportunists.

"I saw them nearby as I reversed.

"I stopped the car in front of the garage and got out to open the garage doors.

"But they suddenly jumped me and knocked me over.

"I tried to get up, but one said he'd kick me if I did. I carried on getting up and he kicked me in the stomach."

The victim's hand and knee were grazed.

The thieves jumped in the car while the victim rushed into his garage and grabbed a spade in a bid to stop them. But he failed to smash the windscreen.

The car - registration W532 ORP - was driven up Cowcliffe Hill Road at speed and has not been seen since.

Both thieves are African-Caribbean men in their early 20s. They had hoods over their heads which were pulled tightly around their faces.
