A car has left the road in the latest incident near a notorious accident blackspot near Huddersfield.

It happened in Highgate Lane near to the Hopton Horse Centre, in Upper Hopton, and close to where there has been a series of incidents in recent months.

The car left the road and ended up on the edge of a field. It is not thought anyone was hurt.

There have been a number of road improvement schemes in the area following a spate of crashes on the B6118 Bellstring Lane/Liley Lane between Kirkheaton and Grange Moor which forced Kirklees Council to act.

‘High friction surfacing’ has been installed on some of the bends along with double white lines and new reflective studs.

Local resident Simon Moyser, who led a five-month campaign for improvements, welcomed the council’s action and said the works have made things better.

But there are still problems in the area, especially when it is wet and mud on the roads, which had often been dragged from quarries, becomes slippery.

Mr Moyser said: “Quite a few safety measures have been implemented recently.

“The council has done some work, and that has helped. But I have heard of two or three minor incidents further along Highgate Lane and down towards Heaton Moor Road in recent times.”

It is understood bosses at both Laneside and Temple quarries have been warned by the council over mud being brought out onto the road, which was closed in February for a “deep clean”.
