CARERS are appealing for £37,000 - the sum needed to run their hospices and care centres for just one day.

Sue Ryder Care has launched a special appeal in its charity shops to raise the money it needs to keep running the extra day of a Leap Year.

The charity has several shops across West Yorkshire including Huddersfield and Mirfield.

It needs to raise £13m from voluntary donations each year to operate its 18 hospices and Neurological Care Centres.

Retail area manager Rosanna Burniston said: "We have placed special Leap Year appeal envelopes in all of our 430 shops throughout the UK. The envelopes are designed so that we can also claim Gift Aid, which means we can get an additional 28p from the taxman for every £1 we are given."

Huddersfield's branch of Sue Ryder Care is in Westbourne Road, Marsh.

Its new manager, Mrs Canice Duval has started the appeal with a £57 donation from a Wakefield woman.
