MORE than 135 carers attended events in Kirklees - with some of them bagging extra cash as a result. They were quids in after getting a free benefits health check to mark Carers' Rights Day. It was the sixth year the event has been marked in the district. Clr Dennis Hullock (right), the council's Cabinet member for health and social care, said: "Carers are often not aware of what they can claim. It can make a big difference to them." About £660m of carers' benefits remain unclaimed annually. Carers had their benefits checked at Gateway to Care in Huddersfield town centre and at Batley Resource Centre.
