Thieves pulled cash machines from supermarket walls in two separate incidents across Huddersfield this morning (Thurs).

The first was at the Asda store on Wakefield Road at Aspley when fire services responded to the alarm going off at around 2am.

Firefighters who arrived at the store found a cash machine had been pulled from the wall and the alarm had been activated by either an electrical surge or dust getting into the smoke detector. Police were called to the scene and are investigating.

Just two hours later, services were again called to the Co-op on Commercial Road in Skelmanthorpe where the ATM had been pulled from the inside of the store.

The machine had been abandoned by the road outside with the cash still inside. A Co-op spokesperson said this morning they were working with the police and working to re-open the store as soon as possible.

West Yorkshire Police are now appealing to hear from anyone with information on either raid.

Raiders broke into the Co-op in Skelmanthorpe and dragged the cash machine out into the road before abandoning it and making off

A spokesperson said: “In both instances, the cash machines were attacked by suspects at the locations, causing extensive damage.

“The incident which happened in Skelmanthorpe, police are particularly interested about any information about a Black Mazda estate which the suspects drove off from the scene in.

“Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information about either of the incidents to contact the police to assist with their ongoing enquiries.”
