A CAMPAIGNING mum has been selected to contest a Kirklees Council seat.

Labour has chosen Karen Rowling to fight Dewsbury West in next year’s election.

The mother-of-four led the campaign to keep Castle Hall School in Mirfield open when Kirklees threatened it with closure in 2008.

Ms Rowling, who is chairman of the school’s PTA, stood for Labour in Mirfield last year, finishing second behind the Conservatives.

The Mirfield woman was selected this week to fight the neighbouring Lib Dem-held seat of Dewsbury West.

She said: “I will be campaigning on the issues that matter to local people – local services, education, unemployment, crime and anti-social behaviour and the environment.

“I will also be talking about the record of the Labour team in the ward, contrasting it with the broken promises of the local Lib Dems.

“I passed up on the opportunity to contest much easier seats in Kirklees because my heart is in Dewsbury.”
