More than 100 friends of tragic schoolgirl Olivia Ruth Glennie gathered at Castle Hill last night for a lantern ceremony in her memory.

Fifteen-year-old Olivia, from Newsome, was found hanging from a tree in Armitage Bridge last Tuesday.

She died on Sunday at Leeds General Infirmary.

Olivia’s death shocked the community and her family and friends are struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

Earlier this week a number of people released lanterns at Castle Hill, but last night a bigger event was held in Olivia’s memory with her friends and their parents coming from across Huddersfield to remember Olivia.

They released Chinese lanterns from the Huddersfield beauty spot.

Described as ‘popular and outgoing’ Newsome High School pupil Olivia was in Year 11 and studying for her GCSEs.

She was the youngest of three daughters and leaves sisters Lucy and Laura.

A celebration of Olivia’s life will be held at St John’s Parish Church in Newsome next Thursday at midday.
