SPEEDING motorists were made to apologise to pupils at a school charity and road safety day.
Students at Castle Hill School in Newsome and police officer Simon Hall armed themselves with a speed camera to catch a woman motorist and a van driver speeding outside the school.
Both drivers were warned about their driving by Pc Hall and ordered to say “Sorry” to pupils who had been staging an anti-speeding demonstration on Newsome Road South.
Pupils from the Newsome special school donned bright clothing and high visibility wear and took part in a road safety quiz to raise cash for Huddersfield-based national road safety charity Brake.
The school’s sixth-formers made banners for the protest.
Sixth-form teacher Sasha Styan said: “We caught two people. It was fantastic. I must have really embarrassed them when they had to apologise to the pupils.
“There’s a 30mph speed limit, but it’s outside a school so it’s quite high. Thankfully none of our pupils have ever been hit.
“Everyone had a good time despite the cold.
“We had a good response from motorists who drove past slowly.”
