Santa braved the icy winds and fierce winds to make a surprise appearance at Castle Hill.

Dozens of fighting fit families were in for a wonderful festive surprise when they walked up Victoria Tower on Saturday and Sunday, to find the festive star hosting a special grotto.

They had all come to make their festive wishes and meet him before he set off on his whirlwind present delivery round.

The normally chilly tower was transformed into a heart-warming, magical winter wonderland, complete with snow, holly and decorations.

And Santa put the icing on the cake, when he carried presents and a Christmas tree up the hundreds of stairs to his den.

One family from Venezuela braved the hostile weather to come meet Santa.

Araristides, 18 months and Emanuel Almady, 11, were given a well earned sweet for their climb.

Emanuel, who now lives in Almondbury, said: “It was really exciting.

“We’ve lived here for eight years but never been to see him before and it was a nice surprise after walking up the stairs.”

Dion Silkstone, 3, from Waterloo, did not want to leave Santa’s side. He said: “I loved Santa and I told him that I want a rocket for Christmas.”

And two-and-a-half-year-old Reigen McMullen, was joined by his mum and grandma, where he was entertained by Santa.

It is the fourth year that he has been found in Victoria Tower, after being invited by Kirklees Council.

He said: “It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet all the good boys and girls in the area, while being able to take in the stunning views around me.

“Sometimes there are some good clouds in the sky that I can point to all the children, to show them where my sleigh and reindeers are parked.”
