CASTLE Hill's Victoria Tower is all lit up!

The Huddersfield landmark is bathed in coloured lights every night this week to herald Thursday's big Christmas lights switch-on in the town centre.

But the plea has gone out: Please look at the Castle Hill lights from a distance.

Staff at Kirklees Council want people to stay away because they will get a better view at a distance and also because they want to avoid damage to the Castle Hill site.

Ranger Julian Brown said: "Lighting Victoria Tower is a complex matter and requires Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent from English Heritage.

"Before that is given, they want to know how the lights are to be taken to the top of the hill, where they will be positioned, how they will be protected - in fact complete assurance that the whole project will be carried out and managed effectively without damage to the site.

"Protecting the ancient earthworks and minimising wildlife disturbance is paramount."

The lights are a prelude to Huddersfield's Christmas lights switch-on ceremony on Thursday night.

That ceremony is followed by a spectacular Festival of Light featuring French trapeze artists in St George's Square.
