IT’S not as recognisable as the Eiffel Tower but Huddersfield’s most iconic landmark is being made into a souvenir.

Castle Hill’s Victoria Tower has been made into a miniature model which can be bought to take pride of place on the mantelpieces in homes throughout the world.

Wakefield-based Lilliput Lane, famous for their miniature hand painted sculptures, have just completed a highly detailed model of the Grade II listed tower.

And while it may not be as in demand as souvenirs of the world’s top tourist attractions, it’s thought to be the first time a Huddersfield landmark has been turned into a sculpture for sale.

It costs £24.95.

It was the idea of Andrew Cousins, managing director of Peter Jones China, which is based on New Street.

And if it proves a hit, other landmarks in the town could be turned into miniatures.

Andrew said: “The Victoria Tower was built in 1897 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria and as we now approach the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth in 2012 it seemed fitting to ask Lilliput Lane to reproduce the Tower. They have done a fantastic job.”

The Earl of Scarborough officially opened Victoria Tower in 1899 two years after it was built. It stands over 900ft above sea level and over the years it has welcomed thousands of visitors.

Peter Jones says the idea has been a year in the making, with Lilliput Lane artists and modellers spending time at Castle Hill before creating the design and model.

It measures 12½cm high and shows Victoria Tower in fine detail complete with medieval well, pathways and there are even rabbits by the gorse bushes.

Just 2,000 miniatures have been made and it was made and hand painted at the Lilliput Lane studios in the UK.

And if it proves to be a success, it could lead to more Huddersfield landmarks being created.
