PENISTONE cattle market faces the axe.

Turnover has halved in three years after the foot and mouth crisis.

Now, crunch time has arrived because it falls short of modern standards.

Improvements costing £40,000 were promised by Barnsley Council at the start of the year.

But the market still fails to meet Government requirements.

The council said it was waiting for confirmation of what was needed before making a decision.

A spokesman said: "Further repairs and improvements are likely to be needed if the market is to continue to be licensed.

"At the same time, discussion are taking place with the auctioneers regarding the future."

In a separate move, Penistone residents are to be asked for their views about the town's Retail Market and its future.

Opinions will be sought on changes to market days and opening times.

Further specialist events or fairs - such as the highly popular monthly farmers' market - could be held.

Volunteers will be quizzing passers-by in the town centre tomorrow and on Friday and Saturday.
