SECURITY cameras have been installed at Dewsbury crematorium in a bid to beat vandalism.

Graves have been desecrated and memorial items stolen.

Yobs pelted a funeral procession with soil and stones in one incident last year.

The £40,000 CCTV system will cover the crematorium and the adjacent cemetery.

Clr Martyn Bolt, Kirklees Council Cabinet member responsible for bereavement services, said: "It is very sad when we have to resort to this."

Gangs of teenagers and younger children are being blamed.

Workers have to clear litter, drug needles and empty beer cans most mornings.

The chairman of the council's Dewsbury area committee said it was very disappointing that the sites had been targeted.

Clr Paul Kane said: "It is important that families, relatives and friends who go to the crematorium and cemetery can do so in the context of what we would all expect - a safe and caring environment."
