The bacterium produces two toxins which are responsible for the diarrhoea and which damage the cells lining the bowel.

MRSA is an antibiotic-resistant bacterium often found in hospitals and commonly associated with poor hygiene.

Patients left weakened by serious illness or surgery are particularly vulnerable to strains of the bacteria which are much harder to kill using conventional antibiotics.
