MOTORISTS were again delayed by a traffic census today on one of Huddersfield's busiest roads.

Drivers complained their journey to work this morning took more than twice as long.

And they blamed census officers, stopping drivers on the busy Wakefield Road at Moldgreen.

The officials are contractors working for the Highways Agency, gathering information for a plan to widen part of the M62.

Drivers stopped today were handed letters saying roadside interviews were the only reliable way to get the data on traffic movements.

But the move angered road users.

An Emley woman said: "It took me almost an hour to get to work in Huddersfield, twice as long as normal.

"The survey was at Smithy Lane, Moldgreen, but the traffic jam stretched back two miles, past the traffic lights at Waterloo.

"It caused gridlock at the junctions, with people ignoring red lights."

A bus passenger, travelling in from Dalton, said: "It stopped traffic for hundreds of yards.

"It is a niggle you can do without on the way to work on a morning."

Last month drivers complained of long hold-ups on roads including Lockwood Road and New North Road.

The survey follows plans unveiled this spring to widen the M62 to four lanes from Clifton to the M1 interchange.

Traffic experts now want to find out what impact the scheme would have on the way people use Huddersfield's roads, particularly during the morning and teatime rush hours.
