PARENTS could intervene to stop a school closing an adventure centre.

Colne Valley High School wants to shut the Peter Brook Centre in North Wales.

The school has used the centre to provide adventure trips for hundreds of children over the past 30 years.

But now school officials fear it is a big drain on resources.

However, former staff and parents are angry at the plans and hope to resist them.

Alan Marchington, a former teacher and governor at the school, was one of the people instrumental in helping to set up the centre.

It is near Bettws-y- Coed and is called Pant-yr-Arian, but was renamed in honour of the late Peter Brook, a former teacher.

Mr Marchington, of Golcar, said: "I knew Peter and had completed a number of walks with him.

"He had also been a member of the search parties, spending many hours in Wales seeking a suitable centre for the school.

"His family became involved after his tragic death and it was suggested it be named after him as a tribute.

"It would be a terrible shame if the centre was closed. Hundreds of families have benefited over the years and it would be good to think hundreds more could benefit," said Mr Marchington.

"The centre has been run by trustees and I assume it cannot be sold without their consent.

"Many people in the Colne Valley would be sad to see such a valuable educational asset disappear.

"Parents helped raise a lot of money for whatever was needed for the centre and I am sure they could do so again."
