A COMMUNITY centre may close because others nearby are free for hire.
Kirklees councillors were being asked this afternoon at the power-broking Cabinet meeting to agree to the closure of Walpole Community Centre, Crosland Moor.
The closure would save the council £13,000.
The premises on Walpole Road are converted from two houses.
If the centre closes, the properties will go back into the council's property bank.
A report to the council Cabinet found that the community centre is under-used.
"This is mainly as a result of having two other well-equipped and functioning community buildings in the same vicinity, one of which is the Family Centre, opposite the Walpole Community Centre," said the report.
The Family Centre belongs to Kirklees Early Years Service (KEYS), part of the education department.
It is well-resourced, with meeting space and childcare facilities.
"More importantly, members of the community can hire this building free of charge," the report says.
Walpole also has another community building, The Muhammad Ali Centre, which is also close by and has meeting space, a bar and sports facilities.
"This building is well used by the local community and is in the process of seeking external funds to further expand and develop."
The report said that despite efforts to increase use of the Community Centre, there had been no regular bookings in the last year.
Discussions had been held with other organisations over whether another use could be found for the building, but there had been no interest.
Local ward councillors are in favour of the closure. Clr Molly Walton wants to see the premises converted back into housing.
