Major roadworks will start on one of the busiest roundabouts in Kirklees on Monday.

The work will add an extra lane to the Chain Bar roundabout at junction 26 on the M62 where it meets the M606 for Bradford and will last for the best part of a year.

During the Highways England project, which will widen the roundabout from three lanes to four, all existing three lanes will remain open during the day to keep delays to a minimum. The roundabout will be reduced to a single lane overnight between 7pm and 6am, Monday to Friday and the work is planned to be completed by the end of March 2016.

Additional full Saturday night closures will be required at times for safety reasons. These closures will be carried out from 7pm on Saturdays until 9am on Sundays to minimise disruption to drivers. The closures will be announced nearer the time and clearly signed diversions will be in place.

Throughout the work, a temporary speed limit of 30mph will be put in place on all the approaches to the roundabout and on the roundabout itself.

Once complete, the scheme will reduce congestion at the roundabout and reduce queueing on the M62 westbound exit slip road.

Improvements are also being made to pedestrian and cycling facilities.
