VILLAGES are vying to be named the best community in a new competition.
The Yorkshire Rural Community Council has launched a new contest, Building Community Life.
This is being run as both a stand-alone competition through the YRCC and through the Calor Village of the Year for England competition.
The YRCC is a charitable organisation which aims to help people in rural communities improve their quality of life.
Calor founded the Village of the Year competition 10 years ago to identify the most well-balanced, proactive communities.
The Calor contest is split into regions.
In 2004, Shelley was named Yorkshire Village of the Year and went on to become Northern Village of the Year.
Parish councils, village halls and community groups can enter the Building Community Life on behalf of their village.
Villagers have to answer questions about all aspects of life in their community.
The village in Yorkshire judged the best place to live will win £500. Winning villages from five regions will all go through to the final - where the overall winner will receive £2,000.
Stephen Hall, competition co-ordinator at the YRCC, said:
"The competition will get residents working together and encourage them to look at how everyone within the community is being provided for."
