A NARROWBOAT renovated by young people made its maiden voyage from Dewsbury Marina after a champagne send-off.

The Lancashire Enterprise has been renovated by Fresh Horizons, a Huddersfield-based social enterprise.

Eight Huddersfield building trainees learned skills in wiring, plumbing, joinery, fitting, insulation, painting, installing windows and upholstery to complete the job.

The vessel sailed to the Navigation pub in Wakefield, where she was handed over to the Bradford Motor Education Project charity, to be used as a training venue for disaffected young people.

Trevor Roberts, chairman of the project development, said the standard of work was very professional.

"To complete the contract and have her ready in October was ambitious. Fresh Horizons did it - despite being the first time they had renovated a barge," he said.

Duncan Nicholson, of Fresh Horizons, said this was the first contract for real cash that had been brought into the area. The Bradford Motor Education Project was extremely pleased with the work, he added.
