HUDDERSFIELD'S British pole-leaping champion, Andy Chattaway, takes on the world's best this week.

Forty-year-old Andy was travelling to Holland today to compete in the World Dutch Pole-Leaping Championships.

And Andy, of Mount Pleasant, Thongsbridge, hopes to make it 13th year lucky in the event, in which he will be competing as a veteran for the first year.

"I can't wait. It's a fantastic atmosphere during the contest and has a theme every year," said Andy, a senior community sports officer for Kirklees Council.

"This year the theme is water sports. I'll be donning goggles and flippers for the jumps!"

Andy, who holds the British record with a leap of 14.29 metres, will be accompanied on the trip by colleague Steve Moss, 38, of Brackenhall, who is also a community sports officer.

Steve's 13-year-old stepson, Thomas Blundell, will be competing for the first time, in the boys' class.

The sport involves running along a wooden jetty, grabbing a pole, shinning up it and jumping over a stretch of water and into a sandpit as the pole topples.
