RESIDENTS have been invited to have their say on the future of an historic sports ground.

Kirklees councillors are holding a public consultation on proposed improvements to the Fartown sports ground off Spaines Road.

Greenhead ward councillors have been working with council officers on plans for the site.

Clr Mehboob Khan said: “An upgrade to the site is long overdue and we are pleased that exciting changes are planned.

“Our aim is to get more people to use the sports grounds to increase physical activity and recreation.”

Local soccer clubs Irish Centre and Heywood Sports and rugby league team St Josephs have already agreed to work together to bring top-class sport back to the complex, which incudes the rugby ground that was scene of many great Fartown triumphs.

Suggested improvements include a toddler and junior play area, an exercise track, parallel bars and a rowing machine.

Clr Khan and Greenhead colleagues Clr Barbara Jones and Clr Mohan Sokhal are to hold a public consultation at the Birkby/Fartown Library on Wasp Nest Road. The event runs from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday.

Clr Khan said: “We would like residents to view the plans as we are keen to hear their views on the upgrade of this popular local attraction.

“This is a very densely populated area so it’s important that any improvements to this valued open space meet the needs of local people.”
