Huddersfield Star Wheelers are staging a free event to get youngsters interested in riding on Sunday.

Following on from last year’s successful Tour de France legacy event the Wheelers are hosting another Go-Ride event to maintain the momentum by giving young people the chance to get involved with cycle sport.

All youngsters across the area are welcome to turn up and take part in the event which is ideal for new riders on Sunday 21st June at Storthes Hall, Kirkburton.

Go-Ride races are co-ordinated by British Cycling to give local children the opportunity to emulate their cycling heroes and get involved with cycle sport.

All events take place in a fun and safe, traffic-free environment and will be led by club volunteers and coaches trained by British Cycling. On the day, young riders will have the chance to take part in a number of events including cross country and timed downhill over the natural trails in Storthes Hall.

Event organiser Thomas Howarth said: “It would be fantastic to have as many of our kids racing as possible.”

More than 60% of the Great Britain Cycling Team started out at Go-Ride Clubs.

Jason Kenny, an Olympic gold medallist and former world champion who progressed from a Go-Ride Club, said: “Go-Ride Clubs provide such a great opportunity for kids to get into cycling. It’s unbelievable to hear about all the young people inspired to get involved after watching events on the world stage and clubs are doing brilliantly at harnessing that inspiration.”

The Go-Ride programme is British Cycling’s development programme for young people, providing a fun and safe way to experience the world of cycle sport. There are 300 Go-Ride clubs across the country in communities and schools where young people are able to sample the various cycle sport disciplines and start enjoying one of the fastest growing sports in the UK.
