Chapel Hill will be closed to traffic in one direction tomorrow (Friday) night.

The lane leading from the town centre to Lockwood will be shut off from 6.30pm while Northern Gas Networks (NGN) carry out essential gas mains repair works.

The team is working near the junction of Lockwood Road and St Thomas’s Road, with gas supply to local properties unaffected.

Although there is a smell of gas in the area, engineers have made the site safe and are monitoring the pipe 24 hours a day.

To ensure the smooth flow of traffic in the area, NGN has scaled down a nearby gas mains replacement project on Wakefield Road in consultation with Kirklees Highways Authority, while the repair works take place on Chapel Hill.

Paul Sadler, Customer Operations Area Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “We are monitoring the pipe 24 hours a day so although there is a smell of gas, the site is completely safe.”

“The safety of our customers and engineers is our number one priority so in order to carry out the repair we will be closing the outbound lane to traffic on Friday night.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience customers may experience as continue this essential repair work, and thank everyone for their patience as we look to complete it as quickly as possible.”
