A CHARITY is in line for a £1m boost thanks to staff of the Halifax bank.

The money for Help the Hospices is being raised through the HBOS Foundation Million Pound Challenge.

The foundation - set up in May, 2002, following the merger of the Halifax and the Bank of Scotland - has pledged to match each pound of the first £500,000 raised by staff, who voted to support Help the Hospices.

One hospice that could be in line to benefit is Kirkwood Hospice at Dalton.

Its fundraising manager, Annabel Arkless, said: "It is fantastic that organisations such as the HBOS are supporting the hospice movement.

"It's great for all the hospices around the country."

Fundraising events planned so far include marathon runs, dress- down days, and raffles for Olympic Games tickets and even an extra week off work.
