Friends and family of a smiling tot are going into battle this weekend.

They will come up against each other in a charity 20/20 cricket game at Cartworth Moor.

And it’s all in memory of little Rowan Poole.

The Denby Dale toddler lost her life to Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) last year.

Her mum and dad, Sarah and Matt, married in 2008 and were overjoyed when their daughter was born on May 26, 2011.

But Sarah said: “We lost our daughter to Spinal Muscular Atrophy on November 23 last year at just 18 months old.

“Rowan delighted everyone she met and enjoyed her short life to the full.

“She made the world more fun, more interesting, more beautiful and above all, more joyful for everyone close to her.”

Now Sarah and husband Matt are backing Team Rowan – one of the teams taking part in Saturday’s cricket challenge.

Up against them will be Scott’s Team, made up of Cartworth Moor cricketers, friends and players from other local teams and leagues and organised by player Scott Bissett.

They will face Team Rowan, which is and made up of friends and family of Matt and Sarah.

Amy Bissett, who is heading up the Cartworth Moor team organising the event, said: “Although Team Rowan is the name of the players who will take to the wicket on Saturday, it is actually everyone and anyone who has helped so magnificently to raise awareness and money for The SMA Trust in memory of Rowan.

“We’re hoping that team will grow again on Saturday, as more people give their support to this very worthwhile cause.”

Already this year Team Rowan has smashed its fundraising target by over 80%, raising more than 22,000 for The SMA Trust, the only UK charity dedicated to funding medical research into this devastating condition, which is little-known, and yet is the leading genetic killer of infants and toddlers.

Saturday’s game has been supported by Holme Valley businesses, who have donated food for a barbecue and prizes for a raffle.

There will also be an auction, with a signed Yorkshire Cricket Club bat one of the lots on offer to the highest bidder.
