A CHARITABLE foundation is to be set up in memory of sports fan Craig Brook.

Football-mad Craig, 31, of Dalton , collapsed and died after playing five-a-side soccer.

Thousands of pounds have been raised in his name since his death almost two years ago.

Now a group of his closest friends want to ensure Craig – known as Brooky – has a lasting legacy.

His best friend Daniel Bray is working to set up the Craig Brook Sports Foundation.

The aim is to raise money and give donations to struggling sports clubs for children and adults across Huddersfield.

Craig’s brother Andy, 43, also from Dalton, said his family and friends wanted Craig’s name to live on.

“Craig’s death had a devastating impact on so many people and we want to keep his memory alive,” he said.

“Craig loved football and rugby in particular and we wanted to raise money and support a cause he would have appreciated.”

Craig died on August 5, 2011. He collapsed after playing football at Royds Hall High School , Paddock.

It was found he had an undiagnosed heart condition.

Craig, a former Rawthorpe High School pupil, played rugby union for Huddersfield Juniors in his teens before his passions turned to five-a-side football.

He played up to four nights a week.

Last August a Celebration Day for Craig raised more than £4,000 which was split between the Oliver Field Appeal and Kirkwood Hospice.

A second Celebration Day is planned for August 10 at Bradley Mills Cricket and Bowling Club, Barr Street, Huddersfield.

There will be various fundraising events and two live bands In Echoes and JB Goode.

A charity five-a-side football tournament involving 16 teams will be held on Sunday at Soccer City, Waterloo .

There will also be a donkey derby at Waterloo Bowling Club on July 20.

Andy said: “We hope to raise lots of money to help local clubs buy kit or equipment that they might not otherwise be able to afford.

“Craig would have loved this.”
