ONE of Britain's biggest annual charity collections has just begun - and Huddersfield people are urged to help make it a success.
Operation Christmas Child delivered 1.3m gift-filled shoeboxes to needy children in eastern Europe last year.
Schools, churches, businesses and individual wellwishers filled them with toys and clothes.
Now, a plea is being made for them to do it again.
Organiser Madeline McClintock said 3,083 boxes were given in Huddersfield, Holmfirth and Brighouse last year.
She added: "Many people in the Huddersfield area did a fantastic job last year and our aim is to better this if we can.
"Sadly, there are still large numbers of children in many countries where war, poverty and natural disasters have left them with nothing."
