HE was a huge football fan.

Craig Brook was just 31 when he died of an undiagnosed heart condition during a five-a-side football match.

And now his family are organising a charity game in his memory.

His brother Andy said: “Craig was a huge Manchester United fan. He and I both had season tickets and used to go to home and away games.

“When he wasn’t watching United, he was supporting Huddersfield Town or watching the Huddersfield Giants.

“We got a letter from Sir Alex Ferguson when he passed away and now other members of the family accompany me to the games in his honour.

“Craig was truly football-mad, so a match seemed the right thing to do in his memory.

“We have organised the game between two football teams, all made up of Craig’s friends.

“He played five-a-side with some of the lads who are playing.

“On the day there will also be an auction and we have got a signed shirt by Fabrice Muamba.

“The story of Fabrice Muamba touched the football world and everybody came together for him, after he suffered a heart attack in a game.

“But we know first hand that not every story has a happy ending.

“This is our most cherished item, which we hope to auction and we also hope it will raise some awareness of the condition.”

Craig, of Dalton, died from cardiomyopathy, a condition that affects the heart muscles and can cause sudden death.

It has prompted his family to go for checks, as it is often a genetic condition.

The event on August 11 will be in support of both the Kirkwood Hospice and The Oliver Field Appeal.

The Oliver Field Appeal aims to raise £500k to send Dalton toddler Oliver to hospital in America should his current treatment for cancer at Leeds General Infirmary prove unsuccessful.

Andy continued: “On the day, we will have live music hopefully from one of Craig’s mates in a band called RedStar – who are due to perform at the O2 Arena in Live and Unsigned.

“But we are just waiting to confirm that.

“We are hoping that some of the Giants may pop down as they had become friendly with Craig.

“Blow-up goals will be set up for the kids to enjoy practising shooting, along with bouncy castles.

“There will also be a barbecue and of course the auction.

“We hope people come along and support the two charities.”

The event is due to start at noon at Bradley Mills Cricket and Bowling Club, on Barr Street, off Leeds Road, with kick off at 1pm.
