A BADLY burned body has been discovered in a blazing van.

The van was discovered in flames on the forecourt of the Esso petrol station on Halifax Road, Staincliffe, in Dewsbury shortly before 5am yesterday.

Fire crews and police were called to the scene.

The fire was confined to the van's cab and firefighters then discovered the badly charred body inside.

Police believe the body is a man's, but are not yet 100% sure.

The van belongs to a Leeds firm called Sandwich King and was not reported stolen.

Detailed post mortem tests are being carried out to find out the identity of the dead person.

A police spokesman said today: "At this stage the death is not being treated as suspicious."

But they do think the fire was started deliberately.

Arthur Payne, 72, who lives next door to the garage, said: "I heard a loud explosion about 4.40am. When I came out the van was well on fire.

"The flames were shooting 20ft into the air."
