CHECKS on the licences of taxi drivers in Kirklees will go ahead after councillors agreed to pay for the scheme.

All current taxi drivers will be checked to make sure they are legally allowed to drive and have no endorsements.

The move comes after some applicants did not reveal convictions because the driver had a number of licences.

Clr Ken Sims told a Kirklees Cabinet meeting: “We have had one or two problems when licensees haven’t attributed the true facts of what they had on their licence.

“You wouldn’t want your daughter being driven around late at night by somebody who has got numerous points for bad driving.”

Clr Jim Dodds said: “This is an excellent scheme. We have the responsibility to keep the general public safe.”

Any new drivers will have to pay for the checks themselves when they apply for a taxi driver’s licence.
