There were wellies of every colour and every design.

But every pair meant a few more pounds to help a vital fundraising appeal at a Huddersfield school.

All the 140 pupils at Kirkburton First School donned their wellies to take part in a sponsored walk around Kirkburton.

They were joined by teachers, school staff and parents for the event, which is their second sponsored challenge this term raising funds for the “Building for the Future” fundraising campaign.

The school, which currently serves 140 children, is now quite literally ‘bursting at the seams and desperately needs more space to provide a first-class learning environment. The plan is to extend the school in 2015 to provide additional class and small group teaching areas as well as extra storage space and toilets.

The full cost will be approximately £300,000 to complete and the Governing Body is in the process of securing funding for 90% of these costs, but the school needs to generate the remaining funds- approximately £30,000 through fundraising.

The Governing Body is looking to raise that money in the current academic year.

The campaign has already raised £8,000 through the “sponsor a brick campaign” which has been greatly supported by village businesses, and fundraising initiatives organised by the school.

In addition, the children have been set a challenge to raise £50 each for their individual engraved brick by participating in three sponsored challenges – a spellathon, the welly walk and a sponsored bounce.

Mark Billington. who chairs the school’s governing body, was delighted with the success of the sponsored event.

He said: “The pupils, teachers and school families have really embraced our fundraising project and we’re incredibly grateful for all their efforts and donations.

“The sponsored walk was a huge event for the school and is on target to generate £1,000 which is another fantastic achievement.”
