YOUNGSTERS playing with matches caused a full-scale fire and police alert.

Police and fire crews went to a derelict mill next to the Folly Hall entertainment complex in Huddersfield at just after 6pm yesterday after reports of a fire.

When fire crews from Huddersfield arrived they noticed flames coming out of a window on the third floor of the mill.

Crews went in and also used a hydraulic platform on the outside to target the flames, which were more than 25 feet up.

Firefighters found a small blaze, believed to have been started by children who had been reported in the mill earlier that day.

Watch Manager Andy Farrell said: "This was a very dangerous situation. I would urge all parents to know where their children are and what they are doing.

"If the fire had spread while the children were on the third floor it could have been a grave situation."

Crews from Huddersfield and Slaithwaite put out the fire and damped the area down.
