THE achievements of children and young people in Kirklees Council care were marked by a special celebration event.

Huddersfield Giants captain Chris Thorman handed out the prizes.

Nominations for the achievement awards were made by carers, social workers, teachers and other adults involved with the pupils.

Awards were presented for a variety of achievements such as good school attendance in times of crisis, meeting new challenges such as starting a new school, improving behaviour or punctuality, conscientious attitude to homework, improving reading, attending clubs outside school, and academic successes in tests and exams.

Clr Jim Dodds, Cabinet member for Children's Services, said: "This event is to give credit to young people who may not have had the best start in life.

"Hopefully it will encourage them to go on to achieve their full potential."
