A Christian primary school serving a deprived neighbourhood is simply outstanding.
That’s the Church of England education inspectors’ verdict on Elland CofE (VA) Junior, Infant and Nursery School.
Leaders at the 223-pupil school are delighted. Their previous SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) rating was Satisfactory - and it is rare for a school to jump two grades.
Headteacher Wendy Holdsworth said: “We work really hard to ensure the children understand what Christian values are, and they are embedded in their everyday lives.
“The staff and governors ensure that quality Religious Education is delivered and we are delighted with the Outstanding grading given as part of the SIAMS report.
“Our challenge now is to maintain this for the future.”
The report said: “The school serves one of the most deprived wards in Calderdale and eligibility for pupil premium is significantly above national average. The proportion of pupils with special educational needs is slightly above average.”
Inspectors graded the school Outstanding in all five areas: distinctiveness and effectiveness, meeting the needs of all learners, impact of collective worship on the school community, effectiveness of religious education, and effectiveness of leadership and management.
They said: “A well developed reward system encourages all pupils to engage with these (Christian) values in an active and effective way, which is evidenced by the good behaviour within the school. Pupils make a strong connection between what they learn in collective worship and how they choose to behave.
“Christian principles inform sensitive behaviour management which minimises negative behaviour. There are many opportunities for spiritual development and pupils particularly enjoy the opportunity to experience the ‘Awe and Wonder Room’ which both stimulates conversation and also offers a much appreciated time to “just be quiet”.
“A wide range of skillfully planned enrichment activities provide pupils with opportunities for spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and gives them the opportunity to experience diversity.
“The school benefits from the strong leadership of a headteacher and governing body.”
