POLICE in Huddersfield are warning of the dangers of the morning-after drivers - after catching one party-goer TWICE the limit at 9am.

They fear many will still be over the limit when they take to the wheel after a Christmas party.

And they highlighted the case with an incident in Huddersfield when a driver was stopped at 9am in Honley and found to be double the legal drink-drive limit.

The news comes as the West Yorkshire force continues its big campaign targeting drink and drug drivers in the festive season.

The Honley arrest was made by officers from the Kirklees Rural Neighbourhood Policing team.

A spokesman said: “Tis the season for drink drivers.....unfortunately.

“This car was stopped at 9am in the morning, due to the manner of driving.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Milsom of West Yorkshire Police

“The driver was asked to do a roadside breath test and the result was they were twice over the legal limit. The driver said they had been drinking the night before.

"The driver was arrested and the car seized as it had no insurance.

“If you’re out this week at a Christmas do, remember that if you have a few drinks, you may still be over the limit as well as feeling rough and hungover the morning after.

“Even if you are lucky enough to be hangover-free the next day, and feel OK to drive, you may still be over the limit. Don’t risk it.”

Asst Chief Constable Mark Milsom said: ‘‘There’s also the very real dangers associated with not being fit to drive. Each year we deal with a number of fatal or very serious incidents in which driving while under the influence of drink or drugs has been a major factor.

“This has led to the deaths of innocent drivers and pedestrians and the awful task many officers have of standing on a family’s doorstep and telling them that someone’s never coming home.

‘‘We must do all we can do to deter people from making the choice of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs. My hope is that our daily updates will demonstrate how many people have been caught recklessly endangering their own and others’ lives, and it will make people think twice before they get behind the wheel this Christmas.’’
