A man who flooded his police cell has been jailed.

Christopher Day, of North Street in Paddock, admitted causing the damage after stuffing food packaging into the toilet.

He claimed that he was frustrated at being kept in the cells of Dewsbury Police Station over a weekend.

He admitted criminal damage and three charges of theft when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that he stole meat worth over £100 from three Co-op stores in Huddersfield.

These included the Marsden branch and Day was arrested after CCTV footage from the stores was examined.

On August 1 the 30-year-old was being held in cell four at Dewsbury Police Station when he caused damage to the walls, toilet and plumbing.

Vanessa Jones, prosecuting, said: “The corridor was completely covered in water.

“The cell door was opened and the PC saw the walls splattered with food remnants and the floor was deep in water.

“Mr Day had put food packaging down the toilet which caused it to flood.

“He’d also cut his finger and smeared the blood on the cell wall.”

Bob Carr, mitigating, said that his client was annoyed as he didn’t want to spend Friday to Monday in the police station.

He told the court: “In frustration he threw the food at the wall and placed the packaging down the toilet.

“He rang the bell, they (police) ignored this and when they got there it had flooded. “

District Judge Michael Fanning told Day he had an extensive record of drug-related thefts.

He jailed him for a total of 26 weeks.
