WORSHIPPERS are battling to raise cash for a new roof at their church.

So far, £25,000 has been secured for the work at Meltham Methodist Church.

Now the race is on to find the other £30,000.

Fundraisers will officially launch their appeal on April 23.

Liz Noble, the appeal organiser, said: "We know people are saying that the building isn't very old.

"But unfortunately the initial building work of 30 years ago is beginning to break down. We have to look to the future and ensure we can repair the roof now."

Work is starting this week, in advance of the final total being raised. Mrs Noble said: "We have to ensure that the building is watertight and safe, so we can continue to worship there."

Initial cash has come from the church's investments and grants.

The appeal to get the remaining sum is being kicked off with an night of entertainment at the church.

Church members will be invited to join the Roof Academy and vote for their favourite acts during the evening.

Future events will include a garden walk and a summer barbecue.
